Saturday 29th September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core of the 47<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Congress of the Fe y Alegr\u00eda International Federation kicked off this morning with an opening ceremony that included speeches by Antonio Espa\u00f1a, S.J., Provincial Father of Spain, Carlos Fritzen, S.J., Fe y Alegr\u00eda International Federation Coordinator, Dani Villanueva, S.J., Executive Vice President of Entreculturas\/Fe y Alegr\u00eda Spain, and Superior General Arturo Sosa, S.J.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening ceremony was followed by a space to address the concept of \u201cFrontier\u201d, with Patxi \u00c1lvarez, S.J., Spanish Delegate for Planning and Discernment, inviting participants to question the position from which we usually view reality and look at it from the perspective of \u201cfrontiers\u201d as a space from which to position ourselves and as a hermeneutical place to interpret and look at the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luisa Pernalete, Education for Peace Coordinator at Fe y Alegr\u00eda Venezuela, then presented frontiers as places from which life springs; rich and teeming with possibility, God is already present in these places where we are called to act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The morning ended with a round table moderated by Luis Aranc\u00edbia, member of the International Federation of Fe y Alegr\u00eda Coordinating Team and delegate from the Social Sector &#8211; Spain. The round table focus on the frontiers in which we are called to act, represented by the following participants:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geographical frontiers &#8211; Alfred Kiteso, S.J. Fe y Alegr\u00eda RD Congo<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender frontiers &#8211; Sof\u00eda Guti\u00e9rrez. Fe y Alegr\u00eda Guatemala<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital frontiers &#8211; Ana Mill\u00e1n. Director of the Fundaci\u00f3n Accenture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intergenerational frontiers &#8211; Milagros Analia. Argentina and Reiris Fern\u00e1ndez. Venezuela. Generaci\u00f3n 21 Youth Network<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental frontiers &#8211; Pedro Walpole, SJ\u2013 Reconciliation Coordinator in Asian-Pacific Jesuit Conferenceand \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Ignacio Garc\u00eda Jim\u00e9nez SJ &#8211; \u00a0\u00a0Ecojesuit founder and JRS Europe Director<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate addressed several of the frontiers from which Fe y Alegr\u00eda today provides a response or wants to provide a response. Frontiers that challenge us, places \u201cwhere today the asphalt ends\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participants in the debate, drawing on their knowledge of Fe y Alegr\u00eda and the perspective of a frontier, responded to questions including: Why is this a frontier for Fe y Alegr\u00eda today? What possibilities does this frontier open for us? What difficulties? Who does it affect? What kind of impacts does it have on people? What does FyA already have and still need in order to respond to that frontier? And based on this frontier and the participants\u2019 knowledge, what is the dream for Fe y Alegr\u00eda? What would you like to see the organisation achieve in the next two years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunch was followed by 11 workshops that explained in greater depth how Fe y Alegr\u00eda is responding in these frontiers, providing global answers from local experiences and showcasing the diversity in Fe y Alegr\u00eda\u2019s response today:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education for returned migrants, with Mikel Cort\u00e9s from Guatemala.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-class and distance education for inmates, with Sim\u00f3n Mart\u00ednez from Paraguay and Daniel Navarro from Argentina.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention of youth violence through restorative practices, with Sa\u00fal Le\u00f3n and Margine Pineda from El Salvador.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education for girls and women, with Badjai Massama and Hayd\u00e9e Rivera from Chad.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational innovation for social transformation: building educational bridges between Spain and Fe y Alegr\u00eda, with Jennifer L\u00f3pez.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning from indigenous populations: education in an intercultural context (Bolivia).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education in contexts of extreme poverty and precariousness, with Mukiay Crispin from DR Congo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education and community relations through interreligious dialogue, with Etienne Mborong from Africa and Kike Figaredo from Cambodia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pathways for Educational Inclusion, with Christian Ubilla from Ecuador.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community commitment to social and labour-market inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, with Claudia \u00c1lvarez from Chile.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural education: a mission (Peru)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking this range of frontiers as a departure point, the workshops presented the people that \u201cinhabits\u201d that frontier, their characteristics, what they need, what they have, what concerns them, what elements of frontier those reality have, their related frontiers, the institutional challenges that exist, and what is required to meet those challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second part of each workshop was set aside as a time for participants to let their imaginations fly, sharing the dreams they have as they hear the speakers\u2019 reality, dreams that make it possible for Fe y Alegr\u00eda to continue working towards creating a more inclusive and humane world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Congress continued with a round table moderated by Luc\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez from Entreculturas, also a member of the Fe y Alegr\u00eda International Federation team. After a morning and early afternoon that focused on the challenges that Fe y Alegr\u00eda faces today and those to which it is already responding (and those to which it is not), the Congress shifted gears to address what it means to be a global movement as method for responding to the challenges presented by global frontiers, taking another step closer to the range of responses that our global network is provided through different networks and organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Dardis, S.J., Assistant Superior General of the Society of \u00a0Jesus; Tom Smolich, S.J., International Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service; Pilar Orenes, Deputy Director of Oxfam Interm\u00f3n; and Sebasti\u00e1n Mora, Professor at the Comillas Pontifical University, participated in the discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Congress Radio on air for nine hours on Saturday, broadcasting the opening ceremony and airing more than 30 interviews with speakers and other Congress participants.
